106 Amendments to the Indian Constitution

Important Information for UPSC GS-II

As of September 2023, the Constitution of India has undergone 106 amendments since its initial enactment in 1950. These amendments can be categorized into three types. Article 368, located in Part XX of the Constitution, outlines the Parliament's authority and procedure for amending the Constitution.

Types of Amendments

Article 368 allows for two types of amendments:

1. By a special majority of Parliament
2. By a special majority of Parliament and the ratification of at least half of the state legislatures
