Montana Lands 700 Million For Major Transmission Project

Montana Secures $700 Million Grant for North Plains Connector Project

Advancing the Nation's First Transmission Project Bridging Eastern and Western Grids

Critical Step in Enhancing Grid Reliability and Resilience

The Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) has announced that Montana will receive $700 million in federal funding to advance the North Plains Connector project, a major energy transmission initiative that will bridge the eastern and western power grids for the first time in the nation's history.

The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is part of the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program, which aims to improve grid flexibility and enhance resilience against extreme events. The North Plains Connector project is among five projects to receive funding under this program, totaling $2.6 billion in awards.

ALLETE, a co-developer of the North Plains Connector project, has applauded the DOE for its support. "This grant is a testament to the importance of the North Plains Connector project and its potential to transform the nation's energy landscape," said ALLETE CEO Bethany Owen. "We are grateful for the DOE's recognition of the project's critical role in enhancing grid reliability and resilience."
