IRS Provides Free File Tax Filing Extension for Individuals
Automatic Extension Available for All Taxpayers
Deadline Extended to October 16, 2023
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is offering free online tax filing extensions to all individual taxpayers, regardless of their income. This extension gives taxpayers an automatic six-month extension to file their taxes, pushing the deadline from April 18, 2023, to October 16, 2023.
To request an extension, taxpayers can use the IRS Free File system, which allows them to electronically request an extension without having to complete a paper form. This service is available to all taxpayers, including those who are not required to file a tax return.
According to the IRS website, the extension "gives taxpayers until October 16, 2023, to file their 2022 tax return."
Taxpayers who need additional assistance can also contact the IRS by phone at 1-800-829-1040.
It's important to note that an extension only gives taxpayers more time to file their tax returns. It does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed. Taxpayers who owe taxes should make estimated tax payments to avoid penalties.
